Laura Kay Keeling

Artist member since 2019
Hamilton, ON

Laura Kay Keeling (she/her/they) is a self-taught visual artist based in Hamilton. Her practice is rooted in a process-centered approach that integrates analog photography, video, digital collage and installation. As a process-based artist utilizing archival investigations, Keelingโ€™s artwork includes elements from plants and flowers that she has grown (for example petals dropped from a flower) or has foraged. She scans, photographs, presses, and repeats when preparing these sourced natural elements. Then, they are added to what she lovingly refers to as her archive, which at the moment, includes over 150 natural elements, creating an ever-evolving digital catalog of the natural world.

Included in her partial gallery are a handful of analog photographs. If you have any questions, are interested in different sizing or in rentals, please don't hesitate to get in touch! :) Thank you!

Q+A

Describe your home in 3 words

Comfy, dogs, plants

When did you start making art, and why?

I've always been interested in photography, I used to carry around a disposable camera when I was a child. I started to dabble creating collages in 2014 in 2016 I joined Akin Collective and started to apply to exhibit my work.

What kind of artwork do you have in your home?

I'm lucky enough to have some pieces from amazing artists I have met through showing work, and from visiting exhibitions. A mix of photography, painting and digital work (as well as a few sculptures), Its such a great way to be inspired in my home.

During my breaks, I tend to ...

stare out windows / pet my dogs / smell the flowers

Only thing you need when you leave the house

a camera
